2017 Fund A Need

The Canyon High School Foundation has selected the Canyon High School Gymnasium as the 2017 Fund A Need project.

This Year’s Project:

The annual Fund A Need is a fundraising project identified by the school that will enhance the learning experience of the entire student body.

How Does Our Gymnasium Impact Our Communities?

The gymnasium was originally built in 1973 and has served as a focal point not only for the school but for the entire Anaheim Hills community. It showcases the talents of our youth by serving as an athletic facility, testing center, auditorium and so much more. Our 2017 fundraising efforts are focused on the Canyon High School Gymnasium, which is a multi-tiered project focused on refurbishing and renovating this vital campus facility that is utilized by over 2,400 students, 1,200 athletes, multiple community athletic and recreational programs. In its current state, the gymnasium is not equipped to adequately meet the needs of these diverse populations.

What Is The Magnitude Of This Project?

To better serve our academic, athletic and artistic groups on campus and in the community, our goal is to collaborate with the surrounding communities to raise money and invest in the restoration of this facility that is the heart of the campus. This structure will require extensive updates:

Phase 1 goals include equipment and lighting upgrades and repairs, new paint, and CIF, League and Academic banners.

Phase 2 goals include removing and replacing original wood gymnasium floor and bleachers.

Phases will be accomplished based upon funding availability. Replacement of bleachers and floors are critical in meeting the current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Our existing bleachers, in use since 1975-76, do not accommodate students and community members who require wheelchair access, significantly detracting from their experience within this facility. Our school district, OUSD, has worked diligently throughout the last 4 decades to maintain and repair the bleachers, however, the bleachers are past their lifespan and are beyond repair or resurfacing. The original wood floor is cracking in certain areas, and is warping at center court. In addition, the floor doesn’t hold finish very long, making it slippery for students when competing, dancing, or performing. Replacing the floors and the bleachers will have the greatest impact on our community, and their improvements are the most critical and costly parts of this renovation.

The total estimated project cost as of 3/23/17 is $800,000.

Why Can’t We Use Measure S Funds for this Project?

Per the guidelines set forth in the bond resolution, Measure S funds will be focused on renovating the educational environment at Canyon, i.e. classrooms. While gyms, pools and fields are all used as educational spaces, the funding priorities are to create science labs that meet current safety and classroom requirements and to remove portable classrooms from the campus.

We are currently looking for:

1. Community members who are willing to help with this project (outreach, marketing, networking, cultivating donors and foundations) and

2. Donors, sponsors, and community/foundation grants to help fund the gym updates.

To thank our donors for your generous support, we would like to offer the following:
